I think one of the most important contributions to my professional and personal success was the influence of my 4-H leaders. They were excellent role models; they encouraged me to set high goals and to work to achieve those goals. They helped me develop my leadership skills and encouraged me to take risks and to step out of my comfort zone.
Judy Huynh, a Michigan State University graduate, spent one year of her degree studying at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. From 1968 to 1971 she taught first and fourth grades and English as a second language in an international school in Vietnam. For 19 years she taught sixth and seventh grades at Palo Community Schools, serving as the service learning coordinator for seven years, until retiring in 2007. She was named the 2003 Michigan Social Studies Educator of the Year for Middle School and was selected as the Ionia County Woman of the Year. She received the Award of Excellence from the Michigan Association of School Boards and was named a finalist for the Online Shared Learning Award from the Global SchoolNet Foundation. She also received the Glenn Taggert Award for Community Contribution to International Understanding from MSU. Huynh is involved with many efforts to end hunger and poverty in our world. She serves on the Kids Can Make a Difference advisory board and the executive board for Empty Bowls. She is an area volunteer coordinator for Heifer International and was a member of the Educators Advisory Council which developed their Global Education Resource Kits. She is a member of LATTICE (Linking All Types of Teachers to International and Cross-Cultural Education), RESPECT (Refugee Educational Sponsorship Program Enhancing Communities Together), iEARN (International Education and Research Network) and Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers sorority. Through 4-H, I have become the person I am today. Not only has it made me who I am, but has given me lifelong friendships and leaders to look up to. 4-H and everyone I have met through 4-H has fostered my passion for animals and led me to the path I am considering for my future.
