/ ECS / Harmony L. Nowlin
4-H taught me tenacity, time management and responsibility. These are traits I use every day in my professional and personal lives. It also taught me valuable network skills that enabled me to form many friendships over the years.
Nowlin serves as community services area manager lead for Consumers Energy Company. She began her career at Consumers in 2002 after serving as vice president for sales and marketing for the Bank of Alma/Firstbank Corporation topping an nine-year career with the bank. She also worked for the IBM Corporation for more than 10 years. As a 4-H alumnus, Nowlin sees the value of her local 4-H program in Gratiot County and continues to support 4-H and MSU Extension locally. She served 15 years as a Gratiot County 4-H leader, and served on the MSU Extension county advisory council, in addition to her role as a member of the county 4-H Leaders Council. She took leadership as the volunteer chair of the Gratiot County 4-H Endowment Campaign and was instrumental in the promotion of a local millage to fund Gratiot County MSU Extension. She has also served as a Michigan 4-H Foundation trustee since January 2013. Additionally, Nowlin continues to serve her community outside of 4-H. She is currently a board member of the Gratiot Area Chamber of Commerce, Greater Gratiot Development Corporation, Middle Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and is a Alma/St. Louis Rotarian (president elect). She also coached the Alma Equestrian Team for eight years, served as a 4-H horse show judge and provided horseback riding lessons to youth.
Through 4-H I have learned so many things that can help me build my confidence. I went from feeling insecure about my disability to being able to tell other kids who have dyslexia that even if it is difficult, you shouldn\'t feel embarrassed about it. Since joining 4-H I can share my experience with dyslexia and help people understand the disability.
