Title: CEO & President, Accident Fund Insurance Company

“I believe that being involved in 4-H allowed me to develop a sense of discipline and responsibility that I use even now on a daily basis. Being accountable for the health of a horse and the camaraderie of my 4-H group provided opportunities to practice the skills in leadership that have allowed me to become president of the ninth largest workers comp company in the country.”

Elizabeth Haar graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in mathematics with the intent of becoming a teacher. While working on her master’s degree, she worked as a pricing analyst for Michigan Millers. Haar decided to become an actuary instead of a teacher, and moved to Citizen’s Insurance. She then joined Accident Fund Insurance Company of America in 1997 as chief actuary, and has served as executive vice president and chief business development officer, where she led the company’s underwriting and marketing efforts. She was then named president and CEO of Accident Fund in June 2005. In addition to her leadership, Haar was the innovative force in creating a new department in 2000 to develop an e-business model. Haar also led Accident Fund in purchasing a mid-western subsidiary in 2006 and in 2007, led the acquisition of a California carrier – making Accident Fund available in 49 states. Volunteer work is very important to Elizabeth Haar. To help others, she not only donates her resources, but also her time with children’s charities, like Ele’s Place, where she served as vice president of its board. She helped found and co-chair the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP), helped lead Virg Benero’s Council of Economic Advisors in 2006 and chaired the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan walk-a-thon in 2009 and 2010. She is a board member for the Westran Foundation, American Red Cross, Griffith Foundation and United Way. Haar was featured in the Greater Lansing Woman Magazine in 2007 and honored as one of Mid-Michigan’s Most Influential Women by Inforum in 2009.
