4-H International Travel Scholarship

Michigan 4-H Outbound International Travel Scholarship Awards

Travel scholarships are available for 4-H youth international travel experiences. Scholarship applications are only made available to 4-H members approved for international travel each 4-H program year.

These scholarships are awarded to 4-H youth who have applied and been accepted to travel as part of a Michigan 4-H-sponsored outbound international travel experience. These travel scholarships are made possible by the Michigan 4-H International Endowment Fund created with gifts from Michigan 4-H international exchange alumni and friends of 4-H international programs, and with support from the Michigan Division, Woman’s National Farm and Garden Association and the Michigan 4-H International Program.

Scholarships are available as follows:

  • Up to $2,000 per traveler is available per year in travel scholarships for the 4-week program. Additional scholarships may be available for youth accepted into the 8-week or year-long travel program. Traveler must be enrolled in 4-H during the travel year.
  • Scholarship recipients are awarded 75% pre-travel and reimbursed the final 25% after all reporting and documentation requirements have been fulfilled.

Requirements for all scholarship award recipients to be completed by the deadline indicated below:

  • Oct. 1 – Evaluation deadline. All outbound delegates are expected to complete a program evaluation when they return from their host country.
  • Oct. 15 – Write a paper or provide comments/quotes about their experience participating in this program to be used in an MSU Extension news article. Submit at least two good photos to be published with the article to the Michigan 4-H international exchange coordinator.
  • Oct. 30 – Deadline to submit receipts of documented travel expenditures for reimbursement equal to total scholarship amount.
  • Nov. 15 – Give a talk/report to two or more groups in your county. These may include 4-H groups, service clubs (i.e. Kiwanis, Rotary), school classrooms, etc. Your presentation should include your video, PowerPoint presentation and/or a display poster.

Scholarship recipients may also be asked to present at one or more statewide events. This could include the 4-H Spectacular or a Woman’s National Farm and Garden Association (WNF&GA), Michigan Division event or meeting.

All scholarship recipients must fulfill the above requirements once they return from their host country. Any participant that fails to adhere to the 4-H Code of Conduct or complete the additional scholarship requirements will be responsible for repaying the entire scholarship amount. If the travel is cancelled and the scholarship funds are not used, the scholarship amount received must be repaid in full to the Michigan 4-H Foundation.
