In addition to the specific skills learned through 4-H projects, invaluable were the experiences of club organization and operation. These skills learned in 4-H have contributed to, and in many ways shaped, my professional career and personal life, including a lifelong commitment to public and community service and volunteering.
Russell G. Mawby is an internationally recognized philanthropist dedicated to improving the lives of young people around the world. He joined the W.K. Kellogg Foundation as director of the agriculture division in 1965. He became vice-president two years later and in 1970 the foundations chief executive officer. Under his 25-year leadership, the Kellogg Foundation became an acknowledged world leader in support of organizations, communities and institutions focused on using practical knowledge to improve the quality of life for people today and for future generations. He retired in 1995 as chairman emeritus. Before joining the Kellogg Foundation, Mawby was a university professor serving on the faculties of both Purdue and Michigan State University. He ended his career at MSU as assistant director of the Cooperative Extension Service responsible for 4-H youth programming. Mawbys personal leadership led to the formation of the Council of Michigan Foundations and the Michigan Non-Profit Association and he continues to serve both organizations as a board member. He is a member of the Michigan Community Service Commission, providing leadership for the commissions support and advocacy for volunteerism in Michigan. He has been awarded 20 honorary degrees and more than 60 awards and citations. In memoriam October 20, 2017.
