Programs like 4-H instill high self-esteem and promote positive youth development. 4-H helped me achieve my goals while exposing me to a number of life experiences and skill building techniques that expanded my educational achievement and future career options.
Marquetta Pearson Frost has been committed to the positive development of young people since she was a young teen growing up in Calhoun County. When rap was beginning to dominate the radio waves and music interests of young people, Frost joined forces with a friend and started Rap in a Positive Perspective. This collaboration brought music and positive messages together to teach young people about appropriate decision-making and alternatives to the negative options that youth sometimes face. Her inspiration, shared through song and public-speaking appearances, has earned her recognition from the Albion Public Schools, Albions Minority Program Services, Calhoun County Communities That Care, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, MSU Extension, the Battle Creek Federal Center and Whos Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Frost has been a volunteer and mentor with the NAACP African, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympics of the Mind (ACT-SO), Habitat for Humanity and the Albion Goodwill Singers. She continues to provide inspirational performances at youth and adult functions throughout her community. She completed her bachelors degree cum laude from Sienna Heights University in 2001 and currently is a Calhoun County 4-H program associate.
Being in 4-H has helped me reflect on who I am, but also helped me feel confident enough to step out of my comfort zone. From my experience in 4-H, I have realized that I have grown as a person but also developed many crucial life and career skills.
