When people in Gratiot County hear the name Rex R. Crumbaugh, they think of his efforts to ensure the community they live in is safe from chemical contamination. This Gratiot county 4-H’er, farmer and community leader took legal action and won against the former Vesicol Chemical Company to help St. Louis and Bethany Township escape further contamination and to provide cleanup of existing chemical waste. His family’s efforts in support of the Pine River Environmental Project are well-documented and represent just one of Crumbaugh’s contributions to his community. He served as a 12-year member of the Breckenridge and Wheeler Co-op Board of Directors and chairman for two years. He has also served on the Chemical Bank and Trust board of directors. He is a noted community supporter, giving to such charities as the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund, the Breckenridge-Wheeler Fire and Rescue Squad, and the Gratiot Community Hospital. Young people in his community benefit from his leadership and support of the Gratiot County Fair for Youth. He also volunteers regularly in support of 4-H, FFA and the Breckenridge and St. Louis Schools. In memoriam March 4, 2013.
