“I learned many lessons as a 4-H member beginning with confidence, respect, leadership and compassion. It taught me how to speak in front of groups, how to run a meeting according to Roberts Rules of Order, and many life lessons that are too numerous to mention.”
Berrien County 4-H’er Barry Borst first started working while in college as an office manager for his family’s excavating business. He was the financial officer, vice president and treasurer of LaSalle Federal Savings Bank. He and his wife then owned a restaurant in Niles for 15 years. Currently, Borst works for J.C. Penney and also consults with a medical survey company administering surveys to hospital employees. Borst is very active in his local community and 4-H. He has been a 4-H leader of the AL-BAR Ranch 4-H club for 39 years, the same 4-H club he was a member of during his youth. He is past president of the Berrien County 4-H Leader Council, Berrien County Horse Leaders and the Berrien County 4-H Foundation board. He currently chairs the Berrien County 4-H Foundation public relations committee. He has chaired the March of Dimes, served as Michiana Chapter Financial Manager Society past president and was the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce director. He also served his local community as a Niles Township trustee and chair of the Fire Committee, Police Committee and Building Committee during his tenure. Additionally, Borst served on the Niles Community Schools Citizens Committee, is past member of the Episcopal diocese executive and standing committees and has coached the Michigan Quarter Horse Association Judging Team.
Because of 4-H I have learned how to use animal science to expand my heard. This knowledge has helped me continue being a 4th generation to show and raise cattle in my family.
