Phil and Kathy Carter have led the Pretty Porkers 4-H Club in Oceana County since 1980. Phil also served on the Oceana County 4-H Council for six years and on the Market Livestock Committee , and he has served as the swine superintendent for 10 years. Kathy has served over 15 years on the Oceana County 4-H Council, most of that time as secretary. The Carters are both retired teachers and continue to educate youth through 4-H. Members of their club learn parliamentary procedure, goal setting and real-life economics in addition to swine nutrition, management and production. The Carters also charge their members to be active within their community. The club is responsible for highway clean-up on a 2-mile section of roadway, participates in the Relay for Life and has helped raise money for cancer research for local cancer patients. The Carters were nominated for the award by the Oceana County Farm Bureau.
